Garbage Dumped Outside Hospital, SDM Office Sparks Outrage in Khansahib

40 Years On, Khansahib Still Without Dumping Site; Public Health at Risk

  1. Budgam,20 Nov 2025 Residents of Khan Sahib town in central Kashmir’s Budgam district have expressed serious concern over the growing pile of garbage accumulating in the heart of the area. Locals say the waste is now being dumped directly in front of the Sub-District Hospital and the SDM office, creating severe inconvenience for patients and the general public.
  • According to locals, Khan Sahib has been grappling with waste managemGarbage Dumped Outside Hospital, SDM Office Sparks Outrage in Khansahibent issues for decades. A municipal committee was established back in 1984, yet the town still lacks an official dumping site. Earlier, garbage from the town was transported to far-flung areas of Khan Sahib, but residents of those areas objected. As a result, waste is now being left near major public offices, putting thousands at risk.

Residents also claim that even the Director of Urban Local Bodies is unaware of the current dumping practices in Khan Sahib. They question why, despite the committee’s existence since 1984, no proper land has been allotted for a dumping site. Several locals point out that the area has ample state land (IC land) where such a site could easily be developed, but the Municipal Committee’s failure and mismanagement are evident.

People fear that the exposed garbage could lead to the spread of diseases. With winter setting in, they also warn that stray dogs gathering around the waste pose a threat to children and the elderly.

Locals have urged the administration to take immediate steps to identify suitable land and establish a scientific waste management system before the situation turns into a full-blown public health crisis.
